Mujra fever takes New Delhi by storm

These days people have started opting for traditional exotic dance as the first choice in bachelor parties or weddings. The mujra dancers have taking a good chunk of strippers and belly dancers’ share in the party dances. Mujra, traditionally performed by courtesans in Mughal court rooms, are resurfacing in the modern society in India.

The songs of choice in such events are “Inhi Logon Ne” from Pakeezah, and “In Aankhon Ki Masti” from Umrao Jaan. Hindustan Times reports that a fashion designer couple Reshma and Bharat Grover had a mujra performance to entertain their guests in their wedding anniversary party.

Mujra don’t come cheap though. Rates start from the starters’ Rs 15,000 and might even cost up to Rs 1.5 million depending upon the expertise and popularity of the artist.

An Indian newspaper The Express Tribune reports that, in the Kamonke police station chowki, near Gujranwala, a forced ‘murja’ session has prompted an investigation and arrest of three police officers.

Three girls have accused the police officials of forcing them to remove their clothes and dance all night. They have also accused the police to steal Rs 200,000 and mobile phones from the girls.

The Kamonke police sub inspector Munawar Shaheed Abid Farooq and constables’ Muhammad Shahid, Sajid and Muhammad Usman arrested the girls when they were returning from a wedding in the area.

At the police station they forced the girls to dance to the song ‘Munni badnaam hui darling tere lie’ all night. The police had also tortured and threatened to nominate them in fake cases when they refused to dance. The three dancing girls, Amina, Sanam and Kulsoom, were brought from Lahore to dance in a marriage of the local politician.

Nargis and Deedar – District Government wanted to take action against the actresses

The theatre monitoring teams of district government raided various theatres in the city and recommended to take action against stage dancers like Nargis, Deedar, Nari, Gulnar and Sara Malik for performing “vulgar” and/or unscripted dances.

Dances objectioned for unscripted and un-approved by the censor rehearsal panel were:

Dance and “dhamal” by Mina Naz in a play Munda Shehr Lahore Da preformed at the Mehfil Theatre. It is told that the stage artist Abida Baig delivered the objectionable, out of script dialogue.
In the stage play, Mochi Derwaza, performed at Al Falah Theatre – Dances by Nari was found to be aggressive and vulgar and Sara Malik was not in script.
In the stage show Dulhan MBBS performed in the Crown Theatre, a group dance by Nasim Vikki and Iram Tahir was found to be unscripted (but not vulgar).
Two of the dances performed by Deedar were “dance was aggressive, movements were vulgar and filthy and they were not in the script.
Dance by another stage dancer Gulnar was also found to be vulgar.
Another dancer Nargis performance was also found to be obscene. She dances in Chalti Ka Naam Gari in the Naz Theatre.
